Septic Tank Systems

Septic tank systems have traditionally been the most common form of foul drainage system for the disposal of waste water for rural locations.  However, in areas where poor soil conditions or high ground water existings, septic tanks cannot operate effectively as the discharged liquids from the septic tank cannot percolate through the sub strata.

Klargester Septic Tank

Septic tanks are designed to dispose of domestic waste water only.  The entire system is normally located completely underground, but does require correct ventilation to allow the noxious gases which develope in the tank to escape.

Septic tanks hold the receiving wastewater long enough to separate solid matter from the liquid waste.  Anaerobic micro-organisms develope within the septic tank and partially decompose the solids.  The resulting liquids pass through the tank and enters a drainage field.  Under no circumstances should the overflow from a septic tank be allowed to discharge into a natural watercourse.

There are various reason which may cause a septic tank to fail.  Click here for further information on septic tank problems.

Septic tanks only partially treat the
receiving wastewater.

It’s an offence for septic tanks to
discharge into ditches or streams.

Septic tanks require emptying to
prevent solids passing over to the
receiving soakaway.

Domestic Sewage Treatment Plants

Clearwater Sewage Treatment Plant

Domestic sewage treatment plants provide an effective solution for sewage treatment disposal in areas not serviced by "mains drainage".  These systems are normally in the form of a "packaged sewage treatment plant", a self contained tank which uses Aerobic micro-organisms to degrade the polluting matter.  The treated effluent produced from these sewage treatment plants is suitable in most cases for discharge direct to a natural watercourse.

There are various types and sizes of packaged sewage treatment plants available which are designed to treat wastewater from residential dwellings to enable the final effluent to comply with the requirements of Regultaing Bodies for discharge direct to a natural watercourse.  The final effluent from these sewage treatment systems is also suitable for discharge into an underground soakaway system.  Click here to view a domestic sewage treatment plant installation.

Packaged sewage treatment plants Develop Aerobic micro-organisms to treat wastewater.

A typical person uses between 150 – 180 litres of water every day.

Environment Agency Exemption Certificates should only be applied for if the receiving watercourse does not normally run dry for periods of the year.

Septic Tank Conversion Units

ImageThe term "septic tank conversion unit" refers to a sewage treatment system which fits within an existing septic tank.  These units are designed to "convert" an existing septic tank or cesspool into a fully funtioning sewage treatment plant, producing a clear, odourless and harmless treated effluent.  Click here for further information.

These units should not be confused with other products marketed as "conversion units" which involve the installation of additional tankage downstream of the existing septic tank.  These products do not "convert" the existing tank, but provide biological treatment in additional tankage.
