Sewage Treatment Plants Essex - Mantair

Sewage Treatment plants are used in areas of Essex where mains drainage is inaccessible and provide Essex homeowners with a modern alternative to septic tank systems.  Acting as an independent waste water treatment system, sewage treatment plants treat the receiving waste water by 95 percent, producing a treated effluent suitable for discharge into the majority of ditches and streams in Essex.

Sewage treatment plants have been widely available throughout the UK since the early 1980’s and are typically referred to as “packaged sewage treatment plants”.  Over the last ten years there have been substantial advances in the design and manufacture of sewage treatment plants for the domestic household sector.  This together with more stringent Environment Agency regulations has resulted in sewage treatment plants being the preferred option over septic tank systems for the disposal of waste water throughout rural areas of Essex and East Anglia.

There are various types of sewage treatment plants available for installation in Essex, and these all use the same principle of developing Aerobic Micro-organisms which reduce the polluting load in the effluent, followed by settlement to remove any fine solids from the treated effluent.  This treatment principle for waste water is the same as the methods used at main sewage treatment works for towns such as Chelmsford in Essex.  Below is an introductory to some of the most popular sewage treatment plants installed throughout Essex.

bioSure

BioSure is a compact packaged sewage treatment plant which provides a discreet, reliable and affordable solution to sewage treatment for domestic dwellings and commercial premises without access to mains drainage. BioSure is available with varying inlet depths ranging from 450mm to 1000mm enabling the system to be installed at a depth suitable for the majority of site levels.

Clearwater
Specifically designed to receive all of the waste water from the property, including kitchen, utility, bathroom and toilets, the Clearwater system treats the incoming waste water at source producing a clear and odourless effluent suitable for discharge direct to a ditch or stream.

The Clearwater system has no electrical or mechnical components within the underground treatment tank and is
powered by a small air blower.

Featured Case Study

Location - New Build Project, Colchester, Essex.

Essex MantairMantair Contracts Division was contacted by an Essex based developer who required a new sewage treatment plant to serve a development of three bungalows near Colchester in Essex.

Project Summary

Mantair engineers worked closely with the client at the initial design stages of this project in Essex to ensure that the key objectives of the project would be achieved.

One of the issues regarding the proposed sewage treatment plant installation was the restricted access onto the building plots.  Access to the building plots was via a 6’8” wide stone track with fencing either side which restricted the size of machinery and the type of sewage treatment plant which could be used.  Consideration also had to be given to the required excavation depth as the foul drainage was to be 1.6 metres deep where it enters the sewage treatment tank.

After lengthy discussions with several UK sewage treatment plant manufacturers, Mantair recommended the installation of a 15PE (population equivalent) Platinum below – ground sewage treatment plant.   Using SAF (Submerged Aerated Filter) technology, this sewage treatment plant is energy efficient and completely odour free whilst having minimal visual impact on the surroundings.

Prior to any works commencing Mantair obtained approval from the Environment Agency and Building Control for the project.

Installation

Prior to any works commencing Mantair engineers scanned the proposed location of the new sewage treatment plant and areas where any excavations were taking place to ensure that no underground services were present.

The scope of the installation works included:

  • Installation of the sewage treatment plant in a suitably sized excavation 3.7 metres deep, including for a concrete base and backfill;
  • Locating the air blower within a Beehive blower housing - a purpose built housing designed to blend into the natural surroundings;
  • Provision of an RCD protected power supply to the Beehive housing;
  • Installation of the air main from the air blower to the sewage treatment plant;
  • Installation of a new pumped outlet to the boundary ditch;
  • Backfilling all excavations and leaving the area neat and tidy.

Commissioning

On completion of the ancillary works Mantair commissioned the sewage treatment plant, including setting of air valves, checking all pipe work joints and viewing the discharge into the final discharge chamber.

Mantair removed all machinery from the Essex site and left the garden area in a neat and tidy manner.
